40-year-old dies in crash on West Capitol Drive on eve of day of remembrance for victims of 'traffic violence' in Milwaukee

A 40-year-old died after a crash Saturday morning on the 7300 block of W. Capitol Dr.

Milwaukee Police took a 34-year-old into custody and the investigation is ongoing, according to a news release.

The crash happened Saturday around 8:30 a.m. when car traveling east on West Capitol Drive at West Appleton Avenue was making a left turn and crashed into another car.

The deadly accident occurred on the eve of day of remembrance for victims of 'traffic violence' in Milwaukee, which Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson has declared after a devastating start to November in terms of deadly crashes.

Over the last decade, reckless driving has emerged as one of Milwaukee’s biggest public safety issues. Milwaukee County set records for traffic deaths in 2020 and 2022.

Some of the most dangerous intersections for cars in Milwaukee are along Capitol Avenue with the intersection at Fond du Lac and Capitol avenue and 51st Boulevard seeing 81 crashes between May 2021 and May 2022.

On Nov. 6, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman was injured in a crash after a dump truck struck his city-owned SUV on the city's northwest side following a press conference on reckless driving.
